A video wall of four portholes

At KARGO68 in Zuchwil, four portholes look out to sea: four 32-inch screens behind brass portholes, driven by two Raspberry Pi 5s in lockstep. The staff change scenes from a phone.

Problem

Four separate screens have to read as one window onto the sea: waterline, light and motion must line up across all four, without drift. And a wall in a restaurant must never go black, not even without internet.

02

Approach

Each player works out its own position from a shared clock; the two Pis align over a direct cable, down to microseconds. A scene change happens only when all four portholes are ready, otherwise it is aborted. Control runs on Cloudflare, but the wall keeps playing without a network. The scenes are made with AI: a 4:1 panorama as the template, then four square images and four videos that loop without a visible jump. Uploaded clips are converted to HEVC and checked by the Pis themselves.

Outcome

Running since 26 August 2026, with eight sea scenes from a Viking ship to an oil rig.
